Pension planning in the UK lacking
We are all getting old, and at some point in our lives there will come a time where we will have to face retirement. From the start of our working lives we all are on a count down to retirement, whether that be at the age of 65, 70 or even later. For some lucky ones this can come much sooner. Either way it is wise to make plans for when this day comes.
Many people see retirement as being years away and will plan for it "in a few years". But that few years turns into ten, then twenty and before you know it you're being handed a gold carriage clock by your managing director, "For he's a jolly good fellow" resounding around you from your colleagues and peers.
All those years hard graft and what for? You've said your goodbyes, been thanked for all the blood, sweat and occasional tears. And now your now ex colleagues will later that afternoon reminisce about the good times and funny stories that involved you, reminding people about the time your tie got caught in the shredder whilst your celebrating with your partner cutting into a juicy steak at one of the local finest restaurants. But tomorrow is a different story, your ex collegaues may make a joke about where's whatshisname this morning, but that'll wear off by lunch. And then it's back to the grindstone as normal, you only being mentioned when some outstanding work gets brought up.
You would like to enjoy your lie in, but you can't. You worry about what the winter will bring, how can you fight off jack frost when you can't afford to turn the heating on, and remember you'll need it on more this year, you can't turn it off when you're at work anymore, you've got no more work to go to!
Then Dave next door, who also recently retired, invites you round for a chat in his new conservatory, passing his new Jag sparkling in the sun on the driveway. Brenda, his wife, just pulling up in her new Mini from her pampering session at the local health spa. You sit down and have a cuppa whilst Dave invites you on an all inclusive, 21 day cruise to the Med'? You unfortunately decline his kind offer but thank him anyway. Maybe a trip down to the coast will be more to your budget, and maybe just for a weekend?
